Description:

Using the recent earthquake in Haiti as a starting point, Capt. Kim Buike (US Navy, retired) will show how Red Cross staff and volunteers can use Depiction’s mapping and simulation tools to rapidly prepare for disasters anywhere in the world by quickly building interactive scenarios using publicly available data. He will demonstrate how Depiction enables you to:
• Map and track key resources and assets: volunteers, vehicles, shelters, etc.,
• Collaborate in developing and vetting response plans for a variety of disaster scenarios
• Maintain and Share situational awareness during the response phase,
• Accelerate damage assessment reports and data sharing,
• Submit shelter situation updates,
• Familiarize out-of-area volunteers with “the situation” before they deploy,
• And much more . . .
Capt. Buike served 27 years in the Navy, commanding a destroyer in the Persian Gulf and the Navy’s most modern shore facility, Naval Station Everett before retiring in 2003. Captain Buike is also a Red Cross volunteer and serves in the local County Emergency Operations Center as a Red Cross Liaison during community disasters. He has been instrumental in the development of Depiction.

Description:

March 15-19 is Flood Safety Awareness week. Humans have always been drawn to water, and human civilization has always been closely tied to the waterways, and the nutrient rich soil frequent flooding provides. Because of this, humans will always be affected by flooding. Find out ways to reduce the impact of flooding on your life. Carol Dunn, Disaster Risk Communicator for the City of Bellevue, Washington Fire Department, will provide tips on what online tools and real time information exist to help you identify your risk of flooding, to reduce the impact of flooding on your life and property, and what online tools can help you stay ahead of the water.

Carol Dunn has been active in multiple flood related disaster responses and “Preparing for Flooding” seminars for people likely to be affected by flooding. Previously on staff with the American Red Cross in Seattle in the Emergency Services Division, Dunn is still an active member of their Disaster Services Human Resources. Main creator of 3 Days 3 Ways: Be Ready for Disasters and Emergencies, and the disaster readiness knowledge database www.2resilience.org and blog, she can be found at @Caroldn on Twitter. She is an executive Committee member of Partners in Emergency Preparedness Conference, and previously worked in international aid in the former Soviet Union as a management consultant with Ernst & Young London.

This webinar is hosted by Depiction, Inc. Depiction is desktop software that puts powerful mapping, simulation and collaboration tools in the hands of everyday people, in a package that is both easy to use and affordable. Depiction is used by professional emergency managers, the Red Cross, emergency volunteers and more to prepare for and respond to disasters.

Webinar attendees will also receive a free download of Depiction’s Preparedness Add-on Pack.

Description: The effectiveness of all of ongoing and future H1N1 operations, such as vaccination clinics and alternate care facilities, depends heavily on real-time information-sharing and coordination among the many decision-makers involved, so that resources are managed and services are delivered in a timely and efficient manner.

And it’s this problem of providing for real-time information sharing and coordination that remains one of the most difficult to solve. No longer. Depiction mapping software solves this challenging problem; and in a straightforward, easy to implement, innovative and inexpensive way.

In this webinar, Kim Buike will demonstrate Depiction’s unique capabilities as a communication tool, enabling multiple agencies to share a common operating picture, increasing the flow of information while decresing the likelihood of errors during communication.

Join guest presenter Lauren Mandel, research coordinator for a new project that identifies and collects key service roles, best practices, tools and resources to make better use of public libraries for hurricane and disaster preparation and recovery. The Florida-based project helps libraries reprioritize disaster and recovery efforts to address the needs of the broader community through partnerships with fellow responders (emergency management, local government and other agencies) and to become a safe haven, a recovery center, information hub and evacuee resource. Come learn how this project can inform your library’s disaster preparedness plan and how your library can play an important role in community preparedness and recovery.
